Unique Perspectives: Are We Entitled to Miracles?
By Kim Stevens

Are We Entitled to Miracles?
Lesson 77 of A Course in Miracles declares: “I am entitled to miracles.”
Miracles, the Course reminds us, are not rare interruptions of the natural order. They are the natural order. They are shifts in perception, moments when we release fear and see through God’s eyes instead of our own.
I had one of those moments years ago at a spiritual retreat. There was a holy man there, someone known for being able to “read souls.” He was, in fact, Mother Teresa’s confessor. And yes, I know what you’re thinking. What could Mother Teresa possibly have to confess??? Right? But of course, she was human, and the man I was about to sit with privately was the one who heard her confessions.
It was a challenging time in my life. I wasn’t sure which end was up. And there was something from my past that had troubled me for decades. It doesn’t matter what it was—that’s not the point. The point is what happened next.
I told Monsignor Esseff my “thing,” the story I had been carrying for years. Without the slightest hesitation, he looked at me and said:
“God used you to do his will. It was never meant to be different.”
It took me a moment to even hear what he said. And then, so simply, so sweetly, he told me a different version of the story. A version told with God’s eyes, not mine. And in one holy instant, a piece of my past I thought was broken was in an instant made whole… it went from being one thing to being something completely different.
That’s what A Course in Miracles calls a miracle. And the lesson is clear: “Miracles do not obey the laws of the world.” What felt heavy for years can dissolve in a heartbeat. “There is no room for doubt and uncertainty today. You will receive the assurance that you seek.”
In that moment, I did.
Miracles are not occasional. They are available to us at every turn… if we are willing. Willing to release our tight grip on how we see things. Willing to let go of grievances. Willing to see differently.
As Lesson 80 puts it: “Let me recognize my problems have been solved.”
It isn’t easy to remember this when we’re in the middle of what feels like a “real” problem. But with practice, we can shift into that elevated perspective, the one that knows every problem carries its solution, and every moment holds the possibility of a miracle.
So to answer the question, are we entitled to miracles? The answer is a resounding “Yes”. The Course promises: “We will not content ourselves with less.” And I just really love that.
