Unique Perspectives: Are You The Cause or The Effect?
By Kim Stevens

I used to think everything was happening to me. Life happened, then I had to take whatever was thrown my way and somehow deal with it as best I could. Operating under this framework, there would be a cause, and I’d have to handle the subsequent effect. A good thing happened in my business, so I experienced success. The sun decided to shine, so I felt happy. I lived life like a dandelion blowing against the fickle winds – and whims – of the world. But when I came to understand I had it all wrong, wow! That realization changed my life.
The truth is, I’m not the effect of a cause that happens to me. I am the cause. Whatever occurs in my life emanates from within. Happiness, contentment, success, productivity – all the things I’m seeking exist within me at this very moment. These feelings are unconditional; I alone hold the power to make them real.
Today, circumstances happen or situations arise and I’ve learned not to resort to a reactionary state of mind. Instead, I remember the power, control and influence I have over my life. It allows me to hold steady and stand firm against the winds of change and whims of the world. I understand life comes from me; it doesn’t come at me.
Do I always embrace this I-am-the-cause mindset? Honestly, no. Sometimes I find myself slipping back into that old mentality, thinking I’m an effect of external factors far beyond my control. Whenever this happens I remind myself that I am not the effect; I am the cause, and with that one shift, I instantly feel free.
