Unique Perspectives: How Do You Find Your Secret Sauce?

By Kim Stevens

In any arena in life, I have structure and I have magic. Let’s take, for instance, business. There’s a certain amount of structure in my business – the systems, rituals, processes, procedures, repetitive patterns that take shape – and there’s also a certain amount of magic.

Magic? You ask.

Yes, I respond. Magic.

And by magic I mean the unexpected moments. The miracles. The blessings. The creativity. The inspiration.

So, I have the combination of those two things – the magic and the structure – and then I also have me. The individual. Or in this case, what I like to call “the alchemist,” blending together my own particular alchemy of structure and magic to create something unique. When I spoke about this during a Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices seminar, I called it the “secret sauce.” But call it sauce, alchemy or potion, it’s what makes my life unique.

Because the combination of structure mixed with magic is different for everyone. Some people are a little more structured, some people more magical. I know professionals who can’t operate without Excel spreadsheets and others who are more free-flowing in the way they get things done. There is no right answer, of course, and it’s the particular blend we create that makes it a divine trinity.

Let me explain: The duality is found in life’s gross relationships, those dichotomous entities we talk about all the time – good and bad, fast and slow, empty and full, things like that. When we add the third element, we make a trinity, and when we make a trinity out of anything, it becomes divine.

That’s how I see this blending of magic and structure. As the alchemist in this duality, we are the third thing that transforms it into a divine relationship. We are the element that takes our unique combination of structure and magic, and turns it into something extraordinary that is our lives.
