Unique Perspectives: Do You Have a Sacred Space?

By Kim Stevens

What if I told you there’s a place where people don’t exist? Would you believe me if I said in this special place, you don’t have a calendar or a bank account or a need to be anywhere except right where you are?

Well, there is a place like that. You just have to create it.

Virginia Woolf talked about women having a “room of their own” and Joseph Campbell wrote about a “sacred place” for “creative incubation.” The idea is that you must craft an environment in your home – it could be a room of your own or a little corner in your office or a sacred meditation space – where you can find yourself again and again. In this place, nothing matters but you and your inner being. And to create a special atmosphere, you might want to add things that feel magical. I’ve put crystals, sentimental gifts, candles, essential oils, incense, crystal bowls, handwritten cards, family heirlooms and books (so many books!) in mine.

I’ve had a space like this everywhere I've ever lived, and it’s not a nice-to-have, it’s a must-have in my daily life. Right now, there’s a big loft in my home and that’s my sacred space where I do yoga, journal, read, sit in the quiet and think. It gives me a sense of steadiness in a world filled with constant bombardment and commotion. Spending time in this space, I not only feel more connected to the world around me but also more connected to who I really am.

In the smallest way and in the most profound way, I get excited just being there. In my sacred space, I can connect the dots, activate new ideas and generate magical thoughts. At the same time magic swirls, I also get a deep sense of what’s really real. The constraints of the world, my obligations, social concerns, expectations people place on me and all the stresses weighing me down – that’s not real. But my sacred space is.

If you create a sacred space, you’ll be like a tree. Grounded and rooted, even as the hectic winds of the world blow.
