Unique Perspectives: The Soul Always Wants to Rise...

By Kim Stevens

There’s a profound truth in this simple idea: The Soul Always Wants to Rise. It’s a perspective that has transformed the way I think, choose, and live. Here’s how I see it: life constantly offers us two paths—the higher and the lower. A higher thought and a lower one. A higher power and a lower power. You could label it as good and evil, or divine and egoic. Those don’t particularly work for me but take your pick, whatever works for you is perfect.

What matters most is recognizing that we always have a choice. And for me the  choice that is UP is always the one I am aiming for.

In A Course in Miracles, it speaks of two voices: the voice of the spirit and the voice of the ego. But here’s what I really love—it introduces a third component: the decision-maker. That’s us. We get to choose which voice to listen to. Every single time.

Here’s a simple way to know which one is speaking: How do you feel? If you feel uplifted, energized, and clear, you’re listening to the spirit and rising. If you feel heavy, doubtful, or drained, chances are you’re tuned into the ego or lower power. This is life-changing discernment. It’s everything, really.

Lately, I’ve been making some bold, exciting decisions. The kind that light me up—decisions that feel aligned, expansive, and full of possibility. I’m energized, empowered, and, dare I say, downright joyful. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, that other voice sneaks in: What if you’re wrong? What if this fails? What if you look like a fool? Cue the doubt, fear, and confusion. Suddenly I feel, well… just lower.

But here’s the thing: I know exactly what’s happening. The decision-maker in me gets to choose. I can either give in to that lower voice or find a way to realign with the higher one.

If our souls are wired to rise. Always. Then when I feel otherwise, I know I’ve veered off course. That lower voice? I’ve learned to recognize it for what it is and consciously choose not to engage with it. This doesn’t mean ignoring reality or avoiding challenges—it means seeking the perspective that elevates me, the one that helps me rise above the noise. This is important to me. I want to listen carefully and feel my way to a higher perspective.

Each of us has our own way of navigating this inner dialogue. I share my own tools and reflections here, week after week, in Unique Perspectives. You know my hashtag: #UPwithKGS? It’s no coincidence that “UP” is central to my message. It’s about choosing the higher perspective, the one that helps me rise.

At the end of the day, I believe that’s what my soul came here to do: rise, grow, and elevate everything I touch. Whether it’s a business decision, a relationship, or simply how I greet the day, I aspire to embody this truth. What’s the Higher way to think about this? That’s the question that guides me, always. Because the soul longs to rise and so do I.
